The general cost of living as an international student in Germany

Generally, cost of living in Germany is relatively affordable. While studying in Germany, you will need to budget for your own living expenses covering feeding, accommodation, stationery, clothing, etc.

Your living cost also greatly depends on your spending habit and location. On  average, it is estimated at 600 per month, which covers most of the basic needs.

As a result, in a year the estimated cost of living is put at 8000. This is just an estimated figure so it could be more or less, depending on your lifestyle.

Also, the cost of studying in Germany depends primarily on where your school is located.  A cities like Munich are obviously more expensive to live in than Leipzig or Würzburg. At times, it might be hard to finance your studies without  securing yourself a part-time job.

We recommend you sort out your accommodation before you arriving in Germany. You are most likely have to find a decent place to live on your own, because German universities do not automatically assign rooms to admitted students when they enrol.

If you are admitted to study in Germany, you need to have health insurance. Make sure to sort out your health insurance status before arriving in Germany for studies.

Getting a Study Visa in Germany as an International Student

First, you must obtain a visa which is granted after you have shown proof that you can afford to take care of yourself while living and studying in Germany.

There are many ways to show that you can finance your studies. Here are some forms of proof acceptable:

  1. Your parents can submit bank statements certifying their income and financial assets.
  2. Someone with permanent residence status in Germany can guarantee the Alien Registration Office to take care of your living expenses.
  3. A security payment can be deposited into a locked account.
  4. You can also present a bank guarantee.
  5. You can present a scholarship cover or award from a recognised scholarship provider.

Make sure to inquire at the German embassy in your country as to what type of financial proof is needed.

We usually recommend students to visit any German embassy in their respective home country to get detailed information on how to obtain a visa.

Tuition fees for International Students in German Universities

For the most part, international students studying for a bachelor, masters and PhD are not expected to pay tuition fees at the German public universities. But as research has shown, this method of learning may not be the case for long.

Quite recently the south-west state of Baden-Württemberg reinitiated tuition fees for non-EU students, and it’s very possible this policy would be replicated across other states in the coming years.

The Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg decided to charge non-EU citizens tuition fees amounting to €1,500 per semester for courses ranging from bachelors, masters or diploma to state examination. Students taking doctoral students are not affected by these fees.

Frankly, the tuition fees in German universities are affordable especially when compared to countries like Australia, UK or USA. The tuition fees differs from program to program and estimated at €1,500 per semester for schools that charge tuition fees.

However, private universities tuition fees are much higher. We recommend that you check this out with your desired institution.

Majority of the courses taught in the universities in Germany are in the German language. There are also increasing number of English courses taught at the cheap tuition universities in Germany.

There are about 70 Universities in Germany, of which about 10% of them are in top ranked 200 when it comes to global rankings.
