Here you will find everything about sports scholarships for foreign students wishing to study in the United States.
Are you a talented athlete who wants to study in the United States to get a degree? Do you participate in competitions that require a high level of sportsmanship? Then you may be a perfect candidate for a scholarship for students participating in the sporting life of the educational institution.
If you are attending a US college, a sports scholarship for student-athletes wholly or partially covers your course and living expenses. This type of financing education in the United States may also be called “athletic scholarship” or have the official name of “subsidized care.” Scholarships are awarded in a variety of sports. However, not all colleges offer subsidized assistance to students-athletes in any sport. Students receiving an athletic scholarship can be trained in programs that give the right to receive the degree in any field of knowledge, of course, in case the University has programs in this area. However, applicants applying for a sports scholarship, must comply with all the usual requirements for entering the United States universities, and then, once they become the students, get satisfactory marks in all subjects in order to have the right to apply for a scholarship, or save it. Different leaders in the field of sports increase the academic requirements for students participating in sports.
Sports scholarships are usually awarded on the basis of invitations for athletes given by coaches who are touring the United States in search of new sports talents.
Proceed with your search for about a year or two before the expected date of your classes start at the University of the United States. Using the database «Peterson’s Career and College Quest» or the publication of the company« Sports Scholarships and College Athletic Programs », which are available at most information and consultation centers), determine which universities offer participation in competitions based on the scholarship. In this list, determine which universities offer the main subject of specialization that you would like to learn. Reduce this list to about 70 schools. The list, which consists of 70 schools, may seem too long, but the proportion of universities and colleges responding to your inquiry is typically only about 5 percent. If the level of competition for admission to these schools is very important for you , you might consider applying only to the schools’ first league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ». To learn more about the three governing bodies of university sport in the United States – the National Inter-University Sports Association (NCAA), – look for information about them on the websites listed at the end of this chapter.
Using the Internet to study the institutions of higher education, get a name and surname of the head coach, no matter what sport you do. Most US educational institutions of this type are on their websites the section entitled “Athletics” or “Sport”. It should be remembered that in the United States, “athletics” includes all sports, not just athletics.
Prepare a letter of recommendation. It should include your name, address, age, what year of high school you are in now, and contact information, including e-mail and fax. Just indicate the physical data, such as height and weight, what goal you are pursuing, intending to going to college on a sports scholarship and whenever you are able to start their studies. In addition, attach a brief description (one or two pages) of your achievements in sport, including the awards and the date. Do not be tempted to stretch this description into several pages: the coaches receive from students so much material that they prefer to have a short summary. If you’re doing a competitive sport, such as soccer or basketball, you may send a video to demonstrate your abilities individual results which can not be measured any other way. Make sure that these materials are in the US NTSC video format. Tell the coach that you have such material.
Try to send this information to all coaches using their email addresses that you have collected as a result of browsing the websites of educational institutions you are interested in. If you cannot find a particular e-mail address, send the information by fax or mail. Make sure that the address contains the line: to the head coach, and possibly enter his / her name and surname.
Coaches should contact you in, approximately, one month. If after this period you do not get a response, write a short note that will remind the coaches that you have already sent them your information and are still interested in applying to study in the University.
Prepare a list of questions and keep it handy in case any of the coaches will call you on the phone in order to obtain additional information from you.
If any college, forming the part of the NCAA, is interested in you, determine the procedure for obtaining permission from the NCAA. For more information on this subject go to the NCAA website. If there is even the slightest chance of your studies in one of the NCAA institutions of higher education, in case you pass the test/ SAT tests, be sure to tell the NCAA the received marks for this test / these tests (code 9999 on the registration form). You cannot get a permission to be enrolled in the institution without sending your SAT results.
A small caveat: if you have been accepted into one of the higher educational institutions of NCAA, do not go to the United States for as long as you get permission to do so from the NCAA. If you go to the United States without proper authorization, you can lose your scholarship.
