2019 List of Scholarships and Free Tuition Universities in Germany for International Students

Germany is currently operating free tuition for both local and international students- what that means is that you are not expected  to pay a dime for your tuition except for the living expenses and other non tuition cost. Free University of Berlin

This is a world class research institution and the largest of all the four renowned research institutions located in Berlin. At Freie Universitat Berlin one-third of its student population are international students. The university is particularly famed for its strength in arts, humanities and social sciences. It has office spaces in the United States, Belgium, Russia, China, Egypt, and India, allowing it to form strong relationships with many universities and better serve students from those countries.

Humbolt University of Berlin

About 10% of the student population of Humboldt University are international students. Infact it is one of the oldest universities in Berlin. Humboldt is a popular  research university with opportunities to work with world renowned faculty in fields such as the history of science, quantitative economics, and climate and sustainability research. Students interested in scientific research are highly encouraged to apply.

Technical University Munich

Germany’s highest ranking university, Technische Universitat Munchen, or TUM, comes in 53rd on the World University Rankings, just above Heidelberg University. It excels in the more technical disciplines, like engineering. The university has well over 5,000 international students, making up about 16% of its student population. Because of the university’s strength in research and engineering, it has strong partnerships with a number of prestigious universities, including U.S. schools such as MIT, Stanford, Cornell, and Georgia Tech. The university also has strong partnerships across Europe and Asia.

Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

This is undisputedly one of the oldest universities in the country. If you are an international student, it might interest you to know that almost 15% of its student population is made up of international students. The university has a rich concentration of over 100 courses, and an increasingly large number of its classes are offered in English to cater to international students, particularly in the fields of business, management, psychology, and physics.

University of Freiburg

With 16% of its student body coming from 120 nations besides Germany, University of Freiburg in Baden-Wurttemberg aims to please international students. The university also offers popular intensive German language courses at its Language Teaching Center, which draws students from more than 50 countries during semester breaks to learn German. The Global Studies Program, a distinguished international master’s program in English, is also a big draw for international students.


DeutschlandStipendium National Scholarship Programme

The Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship Program) annually provides financial and non-material support to talented and committed students from all over the globe. The Germany Scholarship supports highly intelligent students at all participating universities in Germany. This scholarship award is given without consideration of personal or parent income and one’s nationality is not material to award either.   The total scholarship amounts to 300 EUR per month and is awarded for at least two semesters but may be provided for a maximum time which covers the standard period of study.  

DAAD Scholarship Programs

DAAD is a popular joint organisation of Germany’s higher education institutions and is primarily responsible for promoting international academic relations, primarily through the exchange of students, academics and researchers.  The DAAD scholarship database has several scholarships and funding opportunities for international students, graduate students and scientists who are in need of  financial support for their programs, research work or teaching assignments in Germany. The database not only lists all the scholarships offered by the DAAD, but also diverse set of programmes offered by a wide variety of institutions.

Germany Foundations’ Scholarship Programs

In addition, a growing number of political and religious foundations in Germany  offers scholarships to international students from various backgrounds, interest groups, and affiliations.  studentwerk-berlin.de outlines them in this list.

Erasmus Scholarship Programs in Germany

Several German Universities participate in quite a number of study programs which are heavily  funded by Erasmus Mundus and Erasmus+ scholarships.  The scholarships can finance international students to pursue a participating study program in Germany.
