2017 Alexander Rutherford Scholarship at University of Alberta in Canada

The University of Alberta is requesting applicants for its Alexander Rutherford Scholarship for Canadian students. This scholarship is available for Canadian students who want to pursue post-secondary studies.

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and reward academic achievement at the senior high school level and to encourage students to pursue post-secondary studies.

The University of Alberta (equally known as U of A and UAlberta) is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, its first president. Its enabling legislation is the Post-secondary Learning Act.

Course Level: This scholarship is awarded for post-secondary studies.

Scholarship Award: This scholarship will cover Up to $2,500.

Scholarship can be taken in Canada.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following qualifying requirements:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada or Protected Person under
    Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, at the start of your post-secondary studies.
  • Visa students are not qualified.
  • Be an Alberta resident at the time of application. You or your parent(s)/legal guardian must have resided in Alberta at least 12 consecutive months prior to starting post-secondary studies.
  • Applicants are not qualified to receive a scholarship with respect to any grade unless your parent(s)/legal guardian were a resident in Alberta throughout the whole of that grade.
    Have completed high school on or after September 30, 1980.
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed 60% of a full course load in a post-secondary or an apprenticeship program of at least one semester in length.

Nationality: Canadian citizens are qualified for this scholarship.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirement: Applicants must be admitted in, or have completed 60% of a full course load in a post-secondary or an apprenticeship program of at least one semester in length.

How to Apply: Applicants can apply online:

Step 1: Submit your online application when:

  • Your final high school marks are available.
  • You are enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies between August 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018.
  • You have finished high school on or after September 30, 1980.You will be notified of the results of your assessment once your final high school marks are available.

Step 2: If you are qualified, Alberta Student Aid will send a request to your post-secondary school, asking them to confirm your enrolment.

  • If you apply before you start post-secondary studies– Alberta Student Aid will send the Confirmation of Enrolment request to your school by the end of your first month of study.
  • If you apply during or after your post-secondary studies- Alberta Student Aid will send the Confirmation of Enrolment request to your school one month after your application is approved.

Step 3: Once your school receives our request for Confirmation of Enrolment, they have 30 days to respond. Alberta Student Aid will mail a cheque to you approximately 1 month after your school confirms your enrolment.

  • Qualified students who complete high school outside of Alberta must submit an official transcript of their high school marks for that province.
  • Transcripts are not needed for courses in Alberta. Only marks recorded on a valid Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement will be accepted. High School grades obtained through upgrading at a post-secondary institution are not accepted.
  • In the event of a mark change, send a letter indicating the appeal with your grade, mark change and course to Alberta Student Aid.
